Joan Aiken was a much loved English writer who received the MBE for services to Children's Literature. She was known as a writer of wild fantasy, Gothic novels and short stories. She was born in Rye, East Sussex, into a family of writers, including her father, Conrad Aiken (who won a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry), and her sister, Jane Aiken Hodge. Aiken, Joan. THE FAR FORESTS: TALES OF ROMANCE, FANTASY, AND SUSPENSE. New York: The Viking Press, []. Octavo, cloth-backed boards. First edition. Collects fifteen stories. One of her best collections of short fiction for young adults. Most of these stories are in A TOUCH OF CHILL (which follows) and A BUNDLE OF NERVES (which precedes). - A touch of chill (UK only) "Kiss from a stranger" - Good Housekeeping (number , page , November ) condensation of "The smile of the stranger" "Kiss your hand to the magpie" - The faithless lollybird (US and UK) "Listening" - A touch of chill (US and UK) "Lob's girl".
The Touch of Chill in this collection is mostly provided by the short story "The Lodgers" - that and "Power Cut" were the only stories I think really work as horror stories. Although Aiken was a beautiful stylist, most of the stories are not well constructed, and have the feel of having been thrown off in a hurry for sale to some magazine (which admittedly is part of why "The Lodgers" works.).
